She learns that the local prison is in dire need of an executioner. With nationwide protests against capital punishment, there isn’t a man willing to step up. She applies for the job only to be told by the warden that he’s in no mood for jokes and tells her to get lost. She knows he’s desperate and keeps after him until he gives in. To maintain secrecy, she gives him only her first name, which he assumes is an alias. With no previous experience, she takes a crash course on the internet with the help of her best friend. Fearing her anti-death penalty family will disown her, she hides her identity behind a black latex hood and disguises herself with blue mascara. Five years of nursing experience has given Rachel an in-depth knowledge of human anatomy. Her first execution is a success, and she is paid two thousand dollars. A disgruntled prison employee had secretly taped the execution. The entire act is on social media and going viral. Within twenty-four hours, she is on the front page of every newspaper in the country. An army of reporters descends on the warden with questions he can’t answer. The governor freaks out when he sees the warden on TV, telling the whole world he has no idea who she is. She goes on to become a full-time executioner at the Millbrook Penitentiary.
