PBM Therapy: Scientific Review & Medical Benefits
Photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy, formerly known as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), is a non-invasive treatment that uses specific wavelengths of red or near-infrared light to stimulate healing, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain. Unlike surgical lasers, PBM doesn’t heat or damage tissue. Instead, it works at the cellular level, enhancing mitochondrial function and promoting tissue regeneration. PBM therapy operates on the principle of light absorption by chromophores within the mitochondria — particularly cytochrome c oxidase. When stimulated by light in the red to near-infrared spectrum (typically 600–1100 nm), these molecules increase ATP (adenosine triphosphate) production, modulate reactive oxygen species (ROS), and promote gene transcription. These cellular effects translate to improved tissue repair, reduced inflammation, and enhanced cellular function. ![]()
