Luke 23:34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”. What did Jesus really mean? Could there be more than one thing meant in this statement by Jesus? 1. We know that those responsible for His crucifixion either didn't know or didn't believe He was the only begotten Son of God. Again, is there more to His statement? Could it have meant even more? 2. Was His crucifixion part of God's plan from way back; see 1 John 3:8 below. I certainly believe it was part of God's plan. For example, totally accurate events, sayings and a physical description of the crucifixion of Jesus are presented in Psalm 22 and other places. Psalm 22 was written about one thousand years prior to the crucifixion. Remember, all scripture is given by the inspiration of God (2 Timothy 3:16). 1 John 3:8 He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. [This verse and others, such as Hebrews 2:14, tell us of at least one purpose for His crucifixion and death. There may be other reasons we can't fathom]. Regardless, study the Bible entirely. Don't just cherry pick a verse here and there. Get a more complete picture through personal study of God’s word. | |
