royal dance costumes
At the time, ballet was very different from today’s practice. When it was first developing in European royal courts the dancers wore their everyday clothes, which would look very different to ours. Men wore heavily brocaded tunics and coats with knee breeches and wigs while women wore stiffly laced long-sleeved bodices and panniered skirts. These restrictive outfits gave little opportunity for the kind of elaborate athletic movements that would later characterise the art form.

After a short period of very simple costume designs, the Victorian sensibilities that had come to dominate European culture brought back extravagant costumes. This was reflected in dance spectacle, especially in the works of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. On stage these costumes were dazzling but off stage they could be complicated to put on: for example, a ballerina’s costume might comprise a chemise tied at the waist with a ribbon; then a corset laced tight with cotton panties and stockings fastened over them. Often a white batiste bodice with sleeveless ruffles was added and finally the double tarleton skirts of the tutu. A neat sash around the waist completed the ensemble. How the dancers managed to move in these cumbersome and restricting outfits we can only guess.
