Keith Haring Shirt
Keith Haring cannot be ignored. The street artist, who helped to bring modern art into mainstream culture, is now being pulled into a business world that he tried to avoid most of his career.

The Radiant Baby, bold energy lines and other iconic motifs are all part of his playful yet poignant artwork. Here are a few his most iconic symbols, and what each one means.

Symbols
Keith Haring’s work is filled with recurring symbols, including the radiant baby and barking dog. They're like little graffiti tags, and they say "Keith Woz Here." But it's more than cute cartoons. They are a coded reaction to the social problems of his day.

Barking Dogs first appeared as his subway drawings in the 1980s and 1985. The Barking Dog became a symbol that represented oppression and aggressiveness, warning people against thinking critically about authority figures. Haring used this motif in his AIDS activism campaign, especially after he was first diagnosed with AIDS in 1988. His poster, Ignorance = fear, was a central message of the AIDS Awareness movements.

Haring also uses the Heart symbol, which is usually surrounded with energy lines and figures dancing. The artist wanted the viewer to feel a sense of community and love in response to the division and prejudice caused by the AIDS epidemic and global politics.

Barking Dog
Haring’s animated images have become an international visual language, using universal concepts such as birth, death love and sex. He wanted to make his art available to everyone and was successful in doing so by working in public areas such as the metro.

He also subtly changed advertisements on the street, changing "Chardon Jeans" into "Hard On Jeans", and creating collages overtly expressing his political views using newspaper clippings and his drawings.

In 1989 he collaborated with 500 Chicago public schools students to create his signature energetic style. This included symbols, such as radiant dogs and babies, that were accompanied by glowing lights. The mural, which covered 122 Masonite 8x4-foot panels, reflects Haring's remarkable draftsmanship. It was the biggest public art of his career. Haring was diagnosed with AIDS only nine months prior to the completion of this mural. Haring created the Keith Haring Foundation in his memory to help AIDS and Children's Organizations with funding.

Radiant Baby
The drawings of the famous street artist from the 1980s depicting flying saucers, barking dogs and crawling infants have become a visual language that has influenced a generation. The art reflected themes of sexuality, death and birth. In his later art, he used the iconography of his work to advocate for safe sex as well as AIDS awareness.

Haring’s spirituality symbolized by the radiant child. The radiant infant is a symbol for innocence, goodness, potential and youth. The baby is also said to have a special gift and be a light. The glowing baby appears in many of his works with three-eyed babies.

Stuart Ross's lyrics and book by Debra Gasman & Ira Gasman are not as witty and emotionally deep as the real Keith Haring. Daniel Reichard delivers a stunning performance as hip-hop artist Haring. However, his character is lacking in complexity. Kate Jennings Grant is his chronically concerned office manager. Aaron Lohr, as his hunky photograph. Keong Sin as his AIDS stricken girlfriend.

Globe
Haring was influenced to use block colours in saturated saturation, simple shapes, and lines that were simplified by the Pop Art movement. This movement bridged high culture and popular culture. He learned cartooning as a kid and was inspired to create animations by Walt Disney and Charles Schultz.

In New York, when he first arrived, he got involved with the underground art community and became friends with Kenny Scharf. The group all shared a passion and interest in urban street cultures, as well as the idea of putting art into public spaces like nightclubs.

Haring's monumental works of art were not limited to the galleries. They ranged in size from a mural against drugs called Crack is Wack, which was painted in a Harlem play area to an illuminated version in Times Square of his radiant infant. In order to reach a wider audience, his desire to make his art accessible led him to create the Pop Shop. This store sold T-shirts and merchandise with his iconic imagery.
