Disney has pulled a Halloween costume and pajama set for kids that some Pacific Islanders have likened to blackface after it was criticized as culturally insensitive. The outfit, based on the demigod Maui from the movie Moana, depicted the fictional character as sheathed in fabric brown skin with tattoos. The company has since removed the product from its online store. It also yanked the pajamas and a T-shirt that were sold alongside it. The costume depicts the tattoos of Maui, who is played by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Moana. Polynesia considers the tattoos to be sacred, said Tevita O. Kaili, a Samoan-born sociocultural anthropologist at Brigham Young University Hawaii. “When you put them on a children’s costume, it takes away from the meaning of what those tattoos represent,” Kaili told the Huffington Post.
